LIMA (PERU): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived safely in Lima at 11.15pm local time on Tuesday, marking the beginning of his first official visit to South America.
He was greeted by Malaysia's Ambassador to Peru, Ahmad Irham Ikmal Hisham upon arrival via a special flight at the Military Air Base Group No.8, Aeronaves, in Peru.
Accompanying him on the same flight from Cairo, Egypt, were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
Also present were Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, and Deputy Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Si.
Representing the government of Peru were its Minister of Production, Sergei Gonzalez Guerrero; Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Luis Escalante Schuler; and the Commander of the Air Base, General Julio Cesar Gutierrez.
Anwar was given a military salute by the Peruvian army before heading to his hotel for preliminary meetings.
His four-day visit to Peru includes the 31st Apec Economic Leaders' Meeting (AELM).
Today, Anwar is scheduled to meet with President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra at the Presidential Palace of Peru.
They will discuss bilateral issues and cooperation to strengthen relations between Kuala Lumpur and Lima.
Anwar will also be awarded Peru's highest honour, the "El Sol del Peru" medal, in recognition of his leadership.
Additionally, he will engage in a roundtable discussion with key industry leaders from Peru to promote business opportunities, particularly in the renewable energy and digital industries.
Representatives from global companies such as TikTok and Google are also expected to meet with the prime minister.
On Nov 14, Anwar will attend the Apec CEO Summit, where he will participate as a panellist in a session titled "Opportunities and Challenges in the AI Revolution."
On Nov 15, the prime minister will join the Informal Apec Leaders' Dialogue with Guests and the Apec Economic Leaders' Dialogue with the Apec Business Advisory Council (ABAC).
He will also deliver Malaysia's intervention at the AELM Retreat Session on Nov 16.
During the AELM, the prime minister is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with fellow Apec leaders, including from Japan and New Zealand.
