KUALA LUMPUR: A member of parliament was today ordered to apologise to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
This, was after Datuk Azman Nasrudin (PN-Padang Serai) wrongfully addressed His Majesty as Sultan Iskandar during the debates on the Royal Address yesterday.
The instruction was given by the Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.
"Yesterday (Feb 28), in your speech, you mistakenly mentioned the wrong name for His Majesty.
"As a responsible speaker, regardless of the political divide, I must take responsibility for the mistakes made by YB (Yang Berhormat).
"Therefore, I hereby order YB to stand up and apologise to His Majesty," he said.
Azman then stood up and apologised, pledging that such a mistake would not happen again in the future.
"I would like to apologise for my mistake and carelessness during my debate yesterday... for mistakenly referring to His Majesty as Sultan Iskandar Ibni Sultan Ibrahim.
"It should have been His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar. I pledge that such a mistake will not happen again in the future," he said.
Johari then reminded all MPs to be careful in their choice of words, especially when it involves how the Malay Rulers were addressed.
"I hope this serves as a lesson to us all... let's not repeat it," he said.
