Speaker tells MP to apologise over claim RM94mil found in DAP leader's house

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has told Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) to apologise or provide evidence of his claims that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) found RM94 million in cash in a DAP leader's home.

Awang made this claim in Parliament on Monday, alleging that the MACC had found the money in a home allegedly linked to a former DAP minister.

Johari said MACC had already denied Awang's statement, and described the statement made by him as erroneous.

"Either give an explanation if there is proof that MACC's denial was wrong, or else, just apologise. He has a choice, it's up to him," he said.

Awang, however, was not present in the Dewan Rakyat.

RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) stood up and insisted that the Pas member of parliament should be referred to the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee, and suggested that Awang be punished for making the statement.

However, opposition chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Baru) asked for some leniency and to set a date for "negotiations" so Awang could settle the matter amicably.

On Monday, MACC clarified that it had never made any statement on the discovery of RM94 million at the residence of a former minister.

The commission said in a statement that while the MACC respected the rights of MPs to express their views, it was essential that their statements were made based on accurate information.
