LIMBANG: The Sarawak government has revealed plans for a RM6.1 billion mega project - the North Coastal Highway - scheduled to commence from 2025 to 2030, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said the project, funded by the state government, involves the construction of a four-lane highway connecting Miri, Limbang, and Lawas via Brunei Darussalam.
He said the implementation of this mega project is in response to the rapid development occurring in the northern region of the state.
"The first step is to extend the runway of Limbang Airport to allow jet aircraft to land here.
"Secondly, we have identified an area to develop a tourist destination and recreational area facing Brunei Bay. This will be a draw to promote the tourism sector here.
"This four-lane highway will lead to Lawas, where we have also identified an area to be developed as a new port and airport," he said during his visit to three development project sites in Limbang Division on March 6.
Abang Johari added that with this new infrastructure, Limbang has the potential to attract tourists from across the region and promote the gas industry, as the Sarawak government through Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) is developing the gas industry in the area.
"We are currently in discussions with parties from the Middle East who may cooperate with Petros to manage and operate the gas industry, especially the foundation for the petrochemical industry," he said.
