MIRI: The state government welcomes any oil and gas company which wants to participate in the carbon capture and utilisation storage (CCUS) projects in Sarawak, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said last night.
He said interested parties can liaise with Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) as the resource manager.
"Currently we have three CCUS projects including one which involves the participation of a Japanese consortium of oil and gas companies," he said at the opening of One Shell Square Miri (OSSM), the new Shell Malaysia Upstream headquarters, at Miri Times Square.
He said the state government will always give its support to the private sector.
"I hope to see Shell partnering with Petros on our own Sarawak oil and gas entity in the Sarawak oil and gas landscape.
"We have enacted a legislation to promote and develop CCUS in offshore Sarawak.
"This is the legal framework where we can develop and at the same time promote the green agenda and where carbon can be stored in Sarawak's waters.
"We have the legal framework and the law and Petros is our resource manager to promote and develop carbon storage sites."
Abang Johari said with the harmonious relationship between the private sector and the government and citizens, he is sure that the journey of growth is there, especially in the green energy space, be it CCUS or other green technology.
In her welcoming speech, Shell Malaysia country chair and senior vice-president upstream Malaysia, Siti Sulaiman said Shell will continue its vital role in advancing Sarawak and Malaysia's economic growth and energy transition from its new upstream headquarters.
"This commitment is exemplified by the development of the Rosmari-Marjoram gas fields, located about 220km off the coast of Bintulu.
"This is an exciting development for Shell, ensuring a sustained gas supply to meet growing energy demands. Notably, these fields will be primarily powered by renewable energy."
She said another significant project utilising Sarawak's natural resources is the Timi gas field, which is notable for its use of a wellhead platform powered by a solar and wind hybrid renewable power system.
"Beyond our operational achievements, we are also dedicated to powering lives through our flagship social investment programmes such as Shell NXplorers and Shell LiveWire," Siti said, adding these initiatives empower young minds and entrepreneurs to drive positive change in their communities.
She said Shell is also committed to exploring new technologies and sustainable practices that will further enhance our contributions to the region and creating lasting impacts to our communities.
The 13-storey office building is owned and managed by Pantai Bayu Indah Sdn Bhd, with Shell as its anchor tenant.
The building is also equipped with 100 solar photovoltaic panels, generating 80,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy annually and has three bays for recharging electric vehicles for the public.
The old Shell Malaysia upstream headquarters was located in Lutong, near here.
