TANJUNG MANIS: The government is actively implementing various approaches to ensure the Rajang Delta remains a sanctuary for the Irrawaddy dolphins, preserving the marine mammals' habitat in the area, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.
Urban Development and Resources Deputy Minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh said that Irrawaddy dolphins are frequently observed frolicking in the area, attracted by the natural sustainability of the Rajang Delta, making it a known 'highway' for dolphins in Sarawak.
"In the context of Sarawak and the implementation of the Post-COVID Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, we focus on sustainable and inclusive development.
"In line with this, one of our proudest initiatives is the collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund Malaysia, especially in the conservation project of dolphins in the Rajang Delta area," he said during the World Forest Day Celebration event at the Belawai Beach Festival site on Feb 10.
Len Talif added that this joint effort demonstrates the government's commitment to environmental sustainability, including the protection of both flora and fauna, while striving to develop the local economy.
"A conservation plan is required to systematically integrate high conservation areas into the development of the Tanjung Manis Economic Growth Area (T-MEGA) to protect the Irrawaddy dolphins, other wildlife, fisheries, and mangrove habitats," he said.
The Irrawaddy dolphin species is protected under Sarawak law, requiring a hunting licence. Poachers found guilty may face a fine of up to RM25,000 or two years imprisonment.
