Family of six from Besut, Terengganu move to Kota Baru for a month just to sell onde-onde

KOTA BARU:The prospect of a lucrative income selling 'onde-onde' during Ramadan prompted a couple and their four children to leave their home in Besut, Terengganu for a month to open a stall selling the delicacy here.

Rossaizan Yusuf, 47, said her family moved to Kelantan several days before Ramadan began.

"My family have been selling onde-onde here for more than 10 years.

"In August last year, we moved to Besut to follow my husband who decided to work there.

"In Besut, l have been operating a small business from home and because l have a lot of free time, we have decided to come back to Kota Baru to sell our onde-onde. We have rented a house here for a month for this purpose," she said when met at her stall in Kampung Paloh.

"We do not mind paying RM450 for a month's rental as the money that we get from selling the onde-onde is quite good," she said.

Rossaizan said they managed to sell about 20 kg of onde-onde in a day. The kuih is priced at RM1 for five pieces.

"Like other onde-onde sold by other traders, my onde-onde are also made with pandan (screwpine leaf) infused dough and filled with gula melaka or palm sugar.

"Before serving, we will roll them with grated coconut and what makes our onde-onde different is its size.

"Our onde-onde is bigger and sized like a (50 sen) coin and it is good value for the money," she said.

She said most of her customers were regulars and those who live nearby.

"We also use the drive-through concept to make easy for buyers," she added.
