RoS approves amendment to Bersatu's constitution on rogue elected reps

KUALA LUMPUR: The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has approved the amendment to the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's (Bersatu) Constitution, aimed at preventing its members from switching sides.

According to a document sighted by the New Straits Times, the new amendment came into effect on April 1.

Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, when contacted, confirmed the matter.

"Yes, it is confirmed. We will act against the (Bersatu) members of Parliament (who declared their support for the unity government) to pave the way for by-elections if they refuse to withdraw their support against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim," he said.

It was previously reported that Bersatu passed a motion to amend its constitution to prevent more MPs from switching allegiance and declaring support for other parties.

During the party's special general assembly, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the amendment of Clause 10 of party's Constitution, which was in line with the anti-hopping provision under Article 49A of the Federal Constitution, would automatically trigger a by-election.

Through this amendment, six of its lawmakers who pledged support for Anwar's administration must immediately vacate their seats should they continue supporting the unity government once the amendment is passed.

Bersatu is expected to also send letters to its lawmakers, who switched sides for official confirmation over their stance in supporting the unity government.

The MPs who pledged support for Anwar were Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjung Karang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan) and Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang).
