LAHAD DATU: The security level in Kunak waters have been increased following a gunfight here this morning which left two Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) injured.
Lahad Datu member of parliament Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal said the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) and the police are ramping up patrols.
He said members of the public need not worry about any security threats as all areas, especially maritime sections, will be closely monitored as the festive season looms.
"We advise the community in the Lahad Datu parliamentary constituency, especially in the Kunak district area to not panic or worry, and to remain calm.
"The security forces are on alert. Police will further enhance security aspects in this district and its waters to ensure continued safety, even during and after the Aidilfitri celebration," he said in a press statement here today.
Mohammad Yusof said the public can place their trust in the security forces and be assured that the Lahad Datu and Kunak areas are not easily infiltrated.
"This security monitoring sends a clear message that our security forces are always ready to combat cross-border crimes even during festive seasons.
"We advise the public not to worry and to fully trust the security personnel to carry out their duties."
He said the public can also cooperate with the security forces by channeling any information to the police for immediate action.
