Timeline: Violent crimes that have taken place at KLIA

KUALA LUMPUR: The shooting at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) early this morning has shocked the nation and left a bodyguard seriously wounded.

As the nation is still reeling from the shock, the police have launched a massive manhunt for the suspect, known as Hafizul Harawi, 38.

Hafizul had fled the scene in his own car after firing his 9mm semiautomatic pistol, which was parked at level 2 of block C at the airport.

It was also reported that Hafizul had initially planned to shoot his wife and his business partner.

During the early morning attack, the police said that the suspect had initially thrown firecrackers, injuring two members of the public.

The incident had prompted a call for tighter security measures at the airport.

Here, we take a look at some of the violent acts that have taken place at KLIA 1 and 2.

1. 'It was over in three minutes' Apr 10, 2008

Six armed robbers escaped with RM3.5mil during a three-minute heist that took place at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in 2008.

In the 7.30pm incident, the robbers were seen alighting from a BMW car and confronting two workers from a money-changing outlet and two security guards before firing at them.

Two bystanders were also wounded during the robbery.

2. Attack on Sri Lankan Envoy, Sept 5, 2016

A group of protesters were seen assaulting a Sri Lankan High Commissioner based in Kuala Lumpur at that time.

A news report stated that the officials had encountered a group of men when they arrived at the airport to send off a Sri Lankan MP who had been accompanying the former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

According to a news report, the high commissioner had suffered head injuries, while another official who was travelling with him at that time was also injured.

A former Sri Lankan minister, Johnston Fernando, was quoted as saying that the attack was carried out by a group of protesters opposed to Rajapaksa's administration.

Rajapaksa's administration has often been credited with defeating the armed insurgency led by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2009, thus ending the 26 years of civil war.

3. The Kim Jong-nam assassination Feb 13, 2017

It took no more than five seconds, and in one fluid motion, one assailant had Kim Jong-nam in a chokehold and administered enough poison to kill him soon after.

The older half-brother of the supreme leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, had been living abroad since his exile from the hermit kingdom in 2003.

Following his visit to Langkawi, the elder Kim, who was carrying a diplomatic passport, had just arrived at KLIA Terminal 2 to take another flight to Macau when he was approached by two women at the check-in counter.

The assassination looked flawless from start to finish. One was seen standing in front of him and acting as a distraction, while the other quickly delivered the deadly blow.

It was understood that Jong-nam had high blood pressure when he died.
