Ahmad Maslan: Use AI to optimise quality, cost-effectiveness in construction sector

KUALA LUMPUR: Construction firms have been urged to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) to optimise outcomes, boost efficiency and reduce costs.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the ministry would spearhead the integration of technology in the construction sector.

He said the use of AI in the construction sector would produce high-quality work that would benefit the people.

"They (construction firms) need to adopt modern and the latest methods. In the past, we only knew of three dimensions (3D) in drawings, but 3D now is part of IR 4.0 (Fourth Industrial Revolution).

"3D can be used to create medical models of the human body. However, 3D isn't just for the medical sector, it can also be used for the construction industry.

"So let's move towards the latest technology, including the more advanced AI, in the construction industry.

"Among the benefits of using AI are expediting project completions, as well as cost-effectiveness in terms of time, design and accuracy. All of these technologies should bring benefits to the people," he told reporters at a press conference after the handover of 12 completed projects by the Kuala Lumput Public Works Department.

Ahmad said AI could also be used in the construction of roads, buildings, bridges and slopes.

While the integration of AI in the construction industry was expected to accelerate project completion, he said, maintaining quality was crucial to meet the existing standards.

"When we prioritise speed, we must ensure that quality is not compromised. Speed and quality should go hand in hand.

"Both quality and speed have predefined standards. What I aim for here is to enhance these standards to ensure higher quality at a faster pace.

"It may seem challenging, but there's no obstacle that we can't overcome with the adoption of new systems."

He also urged all Works Departments to leverage innovative technologies relevant to their expertise to provide better facilities to the public.

"Among the innovations implemented by the ministry are glow-in-the-dark road markings and the MyJalan app, which is used for reporting road damage.

"These innovations can enhance the execution of tasks and improve our relationship with the public, ensuring that their needs are met promptly and effectively."
