NIBONG TEBAL: Flat Taman Sintar Indah Residents are distressed by the thousands of flies that are plaguing their homes and disrupting their lives.
Private sector worker Shahirah Hashim, 25, said her home had been swarmed by flies three times since she moved in last August.
"I notice that the fly season follows a monthly cycle. After living here for nearly 10 months, this month has been the worst.
"It's difficult to eat or drink. Sometimes it feels like I'm biting into flies.
"I live here with my parents who have health issues. The flies can cause food poisoning. They are everywhere, in the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and outside.
"They even follow me into my car when I go to work."
She said if the issue was not resolved soon, she would move.
Resident G. Sivapakaim, 61, urged for immediate action to address the fly infestation.
"There is a livestock farm nearby. We hope this can be resolved amicably.
"We, the residents, are worried about our health. We are spending a lot of money on fly traps and insect spray."
The problem is believed to be linked to the alleged poor waste management at three farms nearby, believed to be poultry farms.
Earlier, state Local Government Committee chairman Jason H'ng Mooi Lye visited the flats with representatives from the Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) and Department of Veterinary Services (DVS).
The interview with H'ng and residents was disrupted by flies swarming people, cameras and smartphones.
Dead flies were seen on the floor, stairs and ceiling around the flats.
H'ng said the MBSP and DVS had visited the farms and asked farmers to use insecticide to control the flies.
"The visit was prompted by complaints. It was found that the problem would occur during certain months, particularly while chicken is being processed and waste is not managed properly.
"MBSP and DVS have requested pest control measures, including using insecticide, which has already begun."
