Gig Workers Commission to consider six matters to safeguard employees' welfare, says HR ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: The establishment of the Gig Workers Commission needs to take into consideration six matters to safeguard the welfare of the workers.

The six matters include relevant legislation, a grievance mechanism, the structure and functions of the Commission, financial implications, determination of wage rates, social protection, and occupational safety and health and an integrated database for the registration of gig workers and platform providers.

The Human Resources Ministry said this was the result of a meeting between its minister, Steven Sim, and a consulting team from Universiti Malaya on May 14.

"The establishment of the Gig Workers Commission will provide a formal channel to address issues in the gig sector, such as grievances related to platform manipulation of gig workers, wage determination, and other related matters.

"The interim report (of the establishment of the commission) will be presented at the cabinet meeting in June, and the final report will be presented in August," it said in a statement.

On Labour Day, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urged for the swift establishment of the commission to champion the interests of workers in the sector.

Anwar said establishing this commission was crucial to provide greater attention and concern for workers in the relevant sectors.

The establishment of the Gig Workers Commission was announced by Anwar himself in his closing speech at the Bumiputera Economic Congress in Putrajaya.

On March 13, the human resources minister announced that the ministry, in collaboration with UM was conducting a study to facilitate the establishment of the Gig Workers Commission.

He said an interim study report would be presented to the cabinet within the next three months.
