KUALA LUMPUR: The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) has conducted 1,528 integrated enforcement operations nationwide from January to April this year.
The operations involved eight other agencies including Kuala Lumpur City Hall, police and the Kuala Lumpur health department.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said of the total, 178 operations were conducted in Johor, Selangor (171), Kuala Lumpur (169), and Perak (141), among others.
He told the reporters this after inspecting a construction site in Sri Petaling.
He said several violations were identified during the operations, resulting in site closures for 14 days.
"CIDB found construction materials lacking certain standards that could endanger workers' safety and building safety.
"The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) also identified several issues and imposed fines.
"The Health Ministry found eight Aedes mosquito breeding sites and imposed fines of RM500 each, totaling RM4,000.
"The Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) also observed there was mixed waste, which includes food waste and construction site waste," he said.
Ahmad Maslan said police also found unauthorised exits and hoped that contractors would take notice.
"Foreign workers might work during the day, but we don't know what they do at night.
"Contractors should pay attention to ensure the safety of people around construction sites.
He said that a stop work notice for 14 days was issued to the respective projects under the Construction Industry Development Board Act (Act 520).
He hoped that contractors especially for buildings, roads, and bridges would be constantly monitored by CIDB to ensure the safety of their workers and the buildings.
"I hope contractors will check the CIDB website for the latest information. Contractors cannot claim ignorance of issues that can be fined in the future," he said.
CIDB also organises various courses from time to time to enhance the professionalism of construction personnel.
"CIDB will continue to hold courses, especially at its Construction Academy (ABM)."
Also present during the inspection today were CIDB deputy chief executive officer I, Razuki Ibrahim and CIDB Kuala Lumpur director Datuk Gerald Sundaraj.
