KUALA LUMPUR: The government has identified the candidate for Election Commission (EC) chairman following the retirement of Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said the government had followed the process for the selection and that it had obtained consent from His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
He said this at the Postnormal Times Madani Exhibition.
Ghani retired on May 9 after leading the commission for four years.
Meanwhile, when asked about EC deputy chairman Professor Azmi Sharom's calls for the commission to adhere to the principles of democracy and transparency at the highest level, Anwar said: "I can understand (his concerns) because we did not consult the deputy chairman (in the appointment process)… (however,) we have gone through the (necessary) process."
Yesterday, Azmi emphasised the need for transparency in appointing EC commissioners, saying the process was shrouded in secret and opaque practices.
