World-renowned Mt Kinabalu International Climbathon back in October

KOTA KINABALU: The world-renowned Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon will be held on Oct 6 at Kinabalu Park in Ranau.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew said the event would be the 31st edition.

The race held at one of the highest mountains in Southeast Asia has firmly established itself as one of the most prestigious mountain-running competitions globally, drawing elite athletes and outdoor enthusiasts from across the globe.

In 2017, mountain guide Safrey Sumping defended the champion title for the second time.

"The Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon is more than just a race; it embodies the unbeatable human spirit, endurance, and the breathtaking beauty of Sabah," said Liew.

"This event highlights our steadfast commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental conservation.

"We aim for participants to not only push their physical limits but also to develop a profound appreciation for Sabah's natural wonders.

"Let this event inspire us all to safeguard and cherish our environment for generations to come."

Liew said the event would also stimulate the local economy by providing an economic boost to local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, benefiting from the increased activity and spending associated with the event.

Apart from that, the event which was temporarily halted seven years ago, also aims to revive itself as a historical event and reinstating it honours the tradition and legacy of the race.

"We eagerly welcome athletes from across the globe to tackle this formidable challenge and experience the magnificence of Mount Kinabalu," said Liew.

Registration will open on June 4. The categories are divided into Men's Elite, Women's Elite, and Men's Veteran (above 40).

The challenging course spans 26km, with an elevation gain of 2,760m.
