Food poisoning in Gombak: 82 more fall sick

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 82 people suffered food poisoning after having breakfast prepared for a school programme on Saturday.

So far, two people, a 17-year-old boy and a 19-month-old girl who ate the food, have died from food poisoning.

Selangor Health Director Dr Ummi Kalthom Shamsudin said the 82 people suffered symptoms including diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, and nausea.

The source of the food poisoning is understood to be the fried mee hoon and eggs prepared for the event. The appearance and taste of the food had apparently "changed".

Ummi said the food poisoning incident involved those aged between 19 months and 58 years.

Some 28 people received outpatient treatment.

The two who died consumed contaminated food brought home by family members.

Ummi said they were investigating the case, including sending food samples to the National Public Health Laboratory in Sungai Buloh.

Those who attended the programme and are experiencing food poisoning symptoms are urged to seek treatment.

"Programme organisers and the public must be cautious in selecting clean premises and food suppliers.

"Always check the food or drink before consumption, to prevent food poisoning."

She said food handlers must prioritise cleanliness and food safety.
