Cousins' fishing trip at old Lipis mine ends in tragedy

LIPIS: A fishing trip for two cousins turned tragic after one of them was found drowned at a disused gold mine along Jalan Sungai Taban, Kampung Merapoh, near here today (June 16).

The remains of Muhammad Adam Harris Mohd Azman, 18, were recovered by search-and-rescue firemen, and a group of villagers about 2.50am.

Lipis police chief Superintendent Ismail Man said the victim, a student at SMK Tengku Mahmud 2, Besut, Terengganu had gone fishing at the gold mine with his 13-year-old cousin at 7pm yesterday.

"According to the victim's cousin, Adam Harris had entered the water to retrieve the tip of his fishing rod which snapped. He managed to swim about 12m before heading back towards the bank of the lake.

"As he was approaching the bank, the victim could not swim and drowned. His cousin alerted villagers for help before the authorities were informed about the incident," he said.

"Adam Hariss was taken to the Merapoh health clinic where he was pronounced dead at 3am. The body was taken to Lipis Hospital and the case is being classified as sudden death," he said.
