KUALA LUMPUR: The deep and enduring relationship between Malaysia and the United Kingdom has withstood the test of time, transcending political changes and global conflicts.
During the celebration of His Majesty King Charles III's 76th birthday today, British High Commissioner to Malaysia Ailsa Terry underscored the profound and personal connections shared between the two nations.
"The relationship between our two countries feels personal. Everyone I've met has a UK story to share," she said.
She highlighted the diverse connections, from Malaysians who had the honour of meeting the late Queen Elizabeth II to the half a million UK alumni in Malaysia and the military officers trained at Sandhurst.
"Our relationship is built on an extraordinary level of connection, forming the foundation of our longstanding relationship," she added.
In attendance on behalf of the Malaysian government was Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and YTL Corporation chairman Tan Sri Francis Yeoh.
Terry drew parallels between Malaysia and the UK's shared legal, parliamentary, and governmental systems, both countries' constitutional monarchies, and their diverse societies.
"I believe this diversity and tolerance remain our greatest strength," she said.
Reflecting on the resilience of UK-Malaysia bilateral relations, Terry noted, "Our relationship has weathered various storms and transcended politics over time. This remains true today, amid a challenging global context with conflicts in the Middle East, Ukraine, and elsewhere."
Looking ahead, she expressed optimism about the evolving partnership between the two countries.
"Our governments and businesses are working together to tackle the challenges and seize opportunities presented by new technologies such as artificial intelligence, digital and cyber advancements, semiconductors, and renewable energy."
She also highlighted the significance of the UK's entry into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in November, which for the first time, establishes a Free Trade Agreement between the UK and Malaysia.
"This brings new business opportunities and further increases our annual trade, which is currently almost £6 billion."
She emphasised the UK's commitment as Asean's newest dialogue partner and expressed support for Malaysia's upcoming chairmanship in the intergovernmental organisation.
