MoE awaits police investigation results on Kerian school bullying incident

NIBONG TEBAL: The Education Ministry is awaiting the results of a police investigation into a viral video showing a female student being slapped in the toilet of a secondary school in Kerian, Perak.

Minister Fadhlina Sidek said that the matter has been referred to the authorities for investigation before any action is taken in accordance with established guidelines.

"This case is under investigation and has been handed over to the authorities (police) to ensure appropriate action is taken.

"At the ministry, our focus is on preventing bullying in schools. I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone, especially parents, teachers, the community, and students, not to fall into the trap of bullying.

"We have established regulations and enhanced all our guidelines to curb bullying, especially in educational institutions under the ministry," she told reporters today.

Fadhlina, who is also the member of parliament for Nibong Tebal, made these remarks while visiting the media centre set up for the Sungai Bakap by-election at the Rakan Muda Complex in Jawi.

She was asked to comment on the incident.

Perak police have said that they are investigating the alleged bullying of a female Form One student by two Form Three female seniors at a school in the state.

Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri mentioned that police discovered a one-minute, 21-second video circulating on social media yesterday, purportedly showing the Form One student being assaulted by her seniors.

Yusri said that the incident is believed to be driven by jealousy towards the victim, who is said to be close to a Form Three boy from the same school.

In the video, six female students, including the victim, clad in school sports attire, are seen in the toilet. Two students take turns slapping the victim's face.
