Kelantan Perhilitan captures two elephants roaming near Kampung Lepan Anjung

KUALA KRAI: The state Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) have captured two elephants in Kampung Lepan Anjung near Dabong on Wednesday.

Its director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said the elephants were caught after the department received several complaints from villagers who sighted four elephants roaming in the area near the village and other nearby areas on June 20.

Acting on the complaints made by the villagers, Hafid said four rangers from the Kuala Krai Wildlife Department and the Kelantan Elephant Capture Unit were sent to the village.

"At about 10am on June 26, the rangers captured the first elephant, while the second mammal was captured about two hours later.

"Both male elephants were in good health. The two elephants will be relocated to a suitable location soon.

"The department believes these elephants have left their natural habitat, the Gunong Stong forest reserve, which is located near the village," he said in a statement.

The department, he said, has taken action to reduce possible conflicts in the area by advising villagers on to adopt mitigative measures.

"The public is advised to be extra cautious and alert if they encounter wild animals, and to avoid actions that could harm themselves," he said.
