Tawau Hills Park celebrates 45 years of natural preservation

TAWAU: Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of Tawau Hills Park (THP), a pristine tropical paradise in the heart of Borneo.

Spanning 27,972ha of unspoiled rainforest with unique volcanic soil, this natural wonderland offers visitors a rare glimpse into an untouched jungle teeming with diverse flora and fauna.

From cascading waterfalls to towering trees, Tawau Hills Park is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

The park's serene environment is perfect for leisurely hikes, picnics by the river, and wildlife observation.

The lush greenery and vibrant ecosystem make it an ideal destination for photography enthusiasts and anyone looking to connect with nature.

For those seeking a bit of adventure, the park features challenging terrain and three main peaks to conquer: Mount Magdalena (1,310m), Mount Lucia (1,202m), and Mount Maria (1,083m).

These peaks offer not only a test of physical endurance but also stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

During an event marking the 45th anniversary of THP's gazettement yesterday, Sabah Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew commended the efforts to preserve this natural treasure.

"Tawau Hills Park remains the last unique, gigantic tropical rainforest with volcanic soil in Borneo. This area has never been logged, offering visitors an authentic experience of the real jungle. It is an important water catchment area in the Tawau district."

Liew's speech was read by Sabah Parks chairman Peter Lintar. Also present was its director Dr Maklarin Lakim.

Since 2021, the ministry has invested RM4.3 million in upgrading public facilities at THP to enhance visitor comfort.

These improvements include a new viewing platform, a walkway to the waterfall, public toilets, new car parks, fences, and a gate, transforming the park into a more accessible and welcoming destination for tourists.

Tawau Hills Park is also a hub for education and research, attracting both domestic and international researchers studying its rich biodiversity.

The park's diverse flora and fauna make it a valuable resource for scientific exploration and wildlife observation.
