KOTA KINABALU: An Indonesian man was sentenced to two years in prison by the magistrate's court here today after pleading guilty to possessing a fake MyKad.
The accused, Razlan Yusuf, 49, was charged with using an identity card with Malaysian citizenship status under another person's name, which was found to be a fake.
The accused, who holds an Indonesian passport, was charged under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), which carries a penalty of imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to RM20,000 or both.
Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles sentenced the accused to two years jail starting from the date of his arrest on July 16, 2024. He will be referred to the Immigration Department after serving the sentence.
According to the facts of the case, the accused was detained at 3pm on July 16, while verifying his identity card at the National Registration Department Counter at UTC Kota Kinabalu branch.
The accused was arrested after being suspected of possessing an identity card under an assumed name which was not in the department's records.
An investigation revealed that the accused had an Indonesian passport under the name Razlan Yusuf, which was his actual identification document.
