JELI: Umno today confirmed that it has received many requests from its former members to rejoin the party.
Its president and Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, however, did not disclose details on the matter.
"Many former members have expressed their intention to rejoin Umno, but we have to bring it to the disciplinary board first. From there, it will be brought to the party's Supreme Council," he said.
Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, told a press conference after launching the Jeli Umno divisional meeting here today.
On July 2, Zahid was reported to have said that Umno is open to accepting former members who wish to rejoin the party.
He said, "Umno is very open, and the door of Umno is always open. I reckon that whoever would like to come back to Umno, the party will definitely look into it."
Zahid was referring to reports that Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had only recently found out that former minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed was no longer a Bersatu member and asked if Umno was willing to open its doors to Mustapa.
The media recently reported that Mustapa had reiterated his stance that he had retired from politics and would not contest in any elections.
