KUALA LUMPUR: A top Umno leader yesterday confirmed that many leaders who left the party wish to 'reconcile' and return to its fold.
Without revealing the identity of the individuals involved, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed that many former members, particularly those who joined opposing parties, have sent requests to rejoin Umno.
"Many who had previously left the party and joined the opposition have now submitted applications to rejoin Umno," he said.
Asyraf said this when asked about the possibility of Umno lifting its six-year suspension imposed on Sembrong member of Parliament Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.
This follows the decision made by Umno recently to lift former Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman's six-year membership suspension.
Tajuddin recently thanked Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for resolving their long-standing dispute from over two years ago.
Tajuddin said this in a clip sent to the New Straits Times, in which he also praised Zahid's magnanimity in setting aside their previous differences and welcomed his decision to reintegrate him into the party."
