KOTA KINABALU: Contractors and land acquisition are among the factors that have led to delays in the implementation of the National Digital Network (Jendela) infrastructure in Sabah.
The digital infrastructure plan, introduced in 2020, aims to meet the needs of digital connectivity and prepare the nation for a gradual transition to 5G technology.
Sabah Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said that Phase One of Jendela is expected to be completed next year.
"Out of 398 towers, only 149, or 37 per cent, have been completed. However, only 63, or 16 per cent of those completed towers are operational.
"I had met with the Communications Minister; I was told that the focus has always been on Jendela. The delay is mainly due to issues related to contractors, and 20 per cent is due to land issues."
He was responding to a supplementary question by Datuk Dr Yusof Yaacob (Sindumin-Gagasan) on the status of the Jendela project in Sabah during the state assembly's question-and-answer session.
Earlier, Datuk Anwar Ayuub @ Annuar Ayub (Liawan-STAR) had asked how many VSAT Starlink and PoP units have been installed in schools that have difficulty obtaining internet network coverage in the interior areas.
Mohd Arifin said that Starlink is an interim solution while waiting for the implementation of Jendela, which may take some time to complete and become fully operational.
He added that the initiative is part of the government's efforts to bridge the digital divide and provide equal opportunities in learning and digital usage to all residents, regardless of their location.
"The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is conducting a Proof of Concept (POC) for the installation of Starlink satellite devices at 40 locations nationwide.
"Starlink, implemented by Sabah Net with initiatives from the Science, Technology, and Innovation Ministry, aims to provide high-speed internet to remote and underserved areas in Sabah.
"With the installation of 300 VSAT Starlink units in various districts, including the West Coast, East Coast, and Interior regions, we ensure stable and quality internet access."
