Controversial vape vending machine removed from mall

KUALA LUMPUR: A vape vending machine in a Klang Valley mall that sparked debate on social media has been removed.

The vending machine was shut down and removed from the premises yesterday following a visit from Health Ministry (MoH) officials, a mall marketing officer confirmed.

"They informed us of the uproar of the vending machine before we plugged it off and removed it from the premises.

"We knew the seriousness of the issue and took immediate action in front of them," she told the New Straits Times today.

The mall management acknowledged community concerns about health, particularly as the mall attracts families.

"We are a friendly neighbourhood mall and have no intention of causing harm. We cooperate fully with MoH," she assured.

Regarding the vending machine, she explained it was initially part of a market test for a potential permanent vape shop.

"We were also unsure even after allowing it because it is a family mall; so we only allow a short contract term for six months.

She said that while the vending machine did not have a sign indicating it was for those 18 years and above, or verified identification, the mall monitored who was purchasing the products.

"However, our mall is equipped with CCTV, and we monitor who is purchasing from our security room," she said

The New Straits Times is seeking comment from the Health Ministry.
