NUTP supports PM's call to exclude underperforming teachers from time-based promotion

BANGI: Allowing only performing teachers to be given the time-based promotion would ensure that only quality teachers received a salary scale upgrade.

National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) president Aminuddin Awang said they supported Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's call to exclude negligent and undisciplined teachers from being allowed time-based promotion.

Aminuddin said the current approach taken by the Education Ministry was to only automatically promote educators who showed excellent performance.

"The number of service years is not the only factor for promotion, it also depends on the teacher's excellence and performance evaluation scores.

"We fully support what the prime minister said.

"We, too, do not want low-quality teachers to be promoted in the same way as those who work very hard to ensure educational excellence in our country," he told reporters after NUTP's golden jubilee celebration today.

Anwar in his speech earlier said teachers, who were negligent or had disciplinary problems, should be excluded from time-based promotion.

Under the time-based promotion system, undergraduates who enter the profession at Grade 41 will be upgraded to Grade 48 after eight years.

After six years, they would be promoted to Grade 52, and to Grade 54 after the following three years.
