ALOR STAR: The Rural and Regional Development Ministry has called on the relevant parties to take follow-up actions to ensure that rural infrastructure damaged by floods is repaired.
Its Deputy Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang said the ministry is ready to investigate and reconsider any proposals or requests for action following damages due to floods.
"We are aware of the complaints from the community regarding this issue.
"We do not deny that these floods have greatly impacted lives, infrastructure, and sometimes even emotions.
"The ministry always pays attention, especially when it involves rural areas. I believe all proposals will be thoroughly analysed, as possible assistance does not only involve the ministry, but also the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma)," she told reporters today.
Rubiah was asked to comment on the community's complaints in Baling, particularly in Kampung Iboi, about damaged infrastructure such as roads and bridges that have not been repaired following the debris floods on July 4, 2022.
She said that although her ministry is responsible for rural issues, particularly infrastructure, certain allocations for disaster-affected areas are also managed by other ministries and departments.
"For example, programmes to repair or rebuild houses fall under the ministry's responsibility. However, if it involves rebuilding houses, issues related to the site or land need to be resolved first.
"We also have budget constraints. However, any matters brought to our attention will be investigated, and if relevant, we will proceed with repairs, meaning if it is appropriate," she said.
On Tuesday, the New Straits Times reported that residents of Kampung Iboi, the epicentre of a massive flood two years ago that claimed three lives, are concerned that the construction of Sabo dams that could prevent a repeat of the tragedy is not moving fast enough.
Residents say they have not seen any progress at the proposed site of the dams and other infrastructure projects are not completed yet.
