Govt wants to ensure Syariah and civil court judges salaries balanced

PUTRAJAYA: The government plans to introduce a Syariah Judges Remuneration Act to ensure balanced salaries between Syariah and civil court judges.

"I have asked Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar to expedite this bill," said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said this in his speech at the "Upholding the Syariah Law and Judiciary in Malaysia" convention here today.

The Syariah Judges' Remuneration Act would serve to ensure that the status of Syariah judges would not be perceived as inferior to that of civil court judges.

It would also empower Syariah judges to apply the law with greater authority and confidence, elevating the stature of the Syariah court institution.
