Fahmi: MCMC to conduct walk tests for better internet in public universities

SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been tasked with conducting walk tests at public universities to assess internet coverage.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that the Higher Education Ministry had facilitated MCMC's access to university premises for this purpose.

"The directive to MCMC focuses on three aspects of internet coverage: outdoor mobile, in-building mobile, and Wi-Fi.

"Previously, MCMC could only enter certain premises if invited by the management. Now, the Higher Education Ministry has streamlined this process," he said after attending a Ministerial Talk at UiTM Shah Alam today.

Stressing on the importance of comprehensive testing, he said: "MCMC must conduct 'walk tests' in every lecture hall, dormitory, residential college, and common area to confirm internet coverage. We are moving from drive tests to walk tests for a more thorough evaluation."

In the 2025 Budget, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced funding to improve internet access in public universities, with RM120 million allocated specifically for enhancing outdoor coverage, in-building coverage, and broadband services.

On Sept 25, Fahmi said that Anwar had directed MCMC and the Higher Education Ministry to collaborate on addressing connectivity issues at public universities.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir affirmed that the ministry was working with relevant parties to resolve these issues promptly.
