Over 14,000 child sexual crime cases registered in court between 2018 and 2023

KUALA LUMPUR: There were 14,042 cases related to child sexual crimes registered in court from 2018 to last year, said Minister of Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

The numbers, she said, was based on the statistics from the office of the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court.

" There were 2,179 cases in 2018; 1,799 in 2019; 1,869 in 2020; 2,832 in 2021; 2,818 in 2022 and 2,545 last year," she said in a parliamentary written reply yesterday, in response to Syerleena Abdul Rashid (PH-Bukit Bendera).

Syerleena asked on the number of child sexual crimes from 2018 to 2023 under the categories of no further action, under investigation, complaint withdrawn, and brought to trial.

Meanwhile, based on the statistics from the police, Azalina said a total of 7,727 investigation papers were opened for child sexual crimes from 2018 to May this year.

"Of the total, 1,954 cases are currently under investigation; 1,550 cases had no further action taken and 4,223 cases are in court."
