Google launches Advertising Revenue Lab for local news publishers

KUALA LUMPUR: Google today introduced the Google News Initiative's Advertising Revenue Lab Malaysia, with support from the Communications Ministry.

According to Google News Initiative (GNI), this programme aims to empower small and medium-sized news publishers in Malaysia.

"It equips them with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in the evolving media landscape," said GNI in a statement.

GNI said Advertising Revenue Lab Malaysia is part of Google's broader efforts to enhance digital advertising capabilities and foster sustainable business models for publishers of all sizes.

"The programme will provide technical and product training, hands-on support for website optimisation, audience engagement, and strategies to grow advertising revenue," it added.

Google Malaysia country director Farhan S. Qureshi said the programme will help news publishers thrive in the digital age by providing them with tools and training and helping to ensure the future of journalism in Malaysia.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the ministry welcomed Google's initiative to improve media sustainability in Malaysia.

"This collaboration marks a crucial milestone for the Malaysian news industry.

"Equipping news publishers with essential digital tools and expertise will enhance their business models, ensuring a diverse, more sustainable and thriving local news ecosystem," he said.

Meanwhile, Media Prima Bhd group managing director Rafiq Razali said this was a positive development for Malaysian media.

"It empowers publishers to optimise their digital platforms and strengthen their advertising strategies.

"This initiative reflects Google's ongoing dedication to innovation and supporting a free and open internet," Rafiq said.

He said this initiative will pave the way for a vibrant and sustainable future for news and content creators across the Malaysian media industry and foster a thriving digital ecosystem that will ultimately benefit content consumers.

Similarly, Google Asia Pacific managing director for news partnerships Kate Beddoe said it was exciting to launch the Advertising Revenue Lab to help Malaysian news publishers to adapt, evolve, and build more sustainable businesses.
