Conference of Rulers consents to citizenship amendments bill, says Saifuddin

KUALA LUMPUR: The Conference of Rulers has given the green light to the latest citizenship amendments bill presented by the Home Ministry yesterday.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution said the cabinet was informed about the consent after the ministry's presentation to the Conference of Rulers yesterday.

He said the approval would set the stage for parliamentary discussion in the upcoming budget session.

"The process was inclusive and thorough. We went through the amendments line by line with the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam), ensuring that every aspect was considered.

"Even though we have already presented everything as part of the ongoing engagement process, we must comply with the Conference of Rulers' directive to have an audience.

"We are relieved and open-hearted about the opportunity to explain and present our case," he said at a press conference, here.

It was reported that the ministry yesterday presented the amendment to the Conference of Rulers.

Saifuddin said the bill received positive feedback, but there were still matters that needed to be refined with Suhakam before it goes through its second reading in the Dewan Rakyat.
