Brunei soldier dies in motorcycle accident during convoy

KENINGAU: A member of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces died after his high-powered motorcycle collided with a vehicle during a convoy at KM39 on Jalan Keningau-Tambunan yesterday (July 20).

In the 10am incident, the victim, identified as Sergeant Major Mohammad Joeriman Abdul Latif, sustained serious injuries to his body, leg, and left ribs.

He was pronounced dead at Keningau Hospital after nearly five hours of treatment.

District police chief Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai said the victim was riding a Yamaha YZF R6 motorcycle alone within four other motorcycles in a convoy.

The victim and his friends, he said, were heading from Keningau to Sandakan to attend the Asean Bike Week/Bike Fest MC/MG Motor Event from July 19 to 21.

"Upon reaching the scene, a Toyota Hilux 4WD driven by a 70-year-old local man suddenly exited a junction from Kampung Monsorulung, Tambunan, onto the main road the victim was travelling on.

"The victim tried to avoid the vehicle by veering to the right but collided with the front right side of the vehicle," he said when contacted today.

Due to the impact of the collision, the victim's motorcycle was thrown to the right side of the road in the opposite direction, while the victim fell and was pinned under the Toyota Hilux.

"The victim was then taken to Keningau Hospital for further treatment.

"The victim was pronounced dead by a medical officer while receiving treatment at the hospital at 2.56pm," he said.

He added that the driver of the Toyota Hilux has been arrested to assist in the investigation into the case.

"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving."
