MARAN : It will be a bleak Deepavali celebration for the family of Sivalingan Baskaram after he and his eight-year-old son were involved in an accident at KM65.5 of the Jalan Kuantan-Kuala Lumpur here last night.
In the 8pm accident, Sivalingan was killed while his son was injured when the motorcycle they were travelling on was crashed into by a lorry at the scene.
District police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohamad Zamri Mohamad Zaber said preliminary investigations showed Sivalingan, 43, and his son were heading home to Kampung Sri Jaya from town.
Zamri said a lorry coming from the opposite direction suddenly made a right turn at the scene.
"The victim did not have enough time to brake and evade, resulting in a collision with the left rear side of the lorry," he said today.
He added that the victim's son was rushed to the Maran district health clinic for treatment, while the lorry driver escaped the accident unharmed.
"The cause of the accident was due to the negligence of the lorry driver, who suddenly entered the intersection," he said.
He also said that a urine test conducted on the lorry driver showed a positive result for methamphetamine.
