Govt to discuss next steps on ICJ ruling on Wednesday [WATCH]

CYBERJAYA: Malaysia will decide on its next course of action following the recent International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling, which declared Israel's continued presence in the Palestinian territories illegal.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the cabinet, during its meeting on Wednesday, will decide on the steps to respond to the ICJ ruling against Israel.

"Malaysia undoubtedly supports the ICJ's decision, which is based on clear facts regarding Israel's ongoing violence and brutality.

"Therefore, we will deliberate on proposals regarding the impact of this decision and at the cabinet meeting this Wednesday, we will make a final decision on the steps we will take to align with the ICJ's decision to condemn and act against Israel," he said after the launch of the National Month and Fly Jalur Gemilang 2024 celebrations today.

On Friday, the ICJ, which is the United Nations' top court, said Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian territories was illegal and needed to end as soon as possible.

The advisory opinion of the Hague-based court is not binding, but it came amid mounting concern over Israel's war against Palestine, sparked by Hamas's Oct 7 attack.

ICJ presiding judge Nawaf Salam said the court found that Israel's continued presence in the Palestinian territories was illegal and Israel must end the occupation as soon as possible.

It added that Israel was "under an obligation to immediately cease all new settlement activities and to evacuate all settlers" from occupied land.

After the ruling, Palestinian Authority's state minister for foreign affairs Varsen Aghabekian Shahin said the ruling marked a great day for Palestine, historically and legally.

He also said the ICJ was the highest judicial body in the world and it had presented a very detailed analysis of what was going on throughout Israel's prolonged occupation and colonisation of the Palestinian territories in violation of international law.
