Meta apologises and acknowledges translation error on FB during Sultan Ibrahim's coronation

KUALA LUMPUR: Meta Platforms Inc (Meta) has apologised and acknowledged an error over the automated translation of posts related to the installation of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim as the 17th King of Malaysia on its Facebook platform.

Its Southeast Asia director of public policy, Rafael Frankel, said the platform has since resolved the technical error.

"We were made aware of an error in the automated translation from Malay to English, affecting Facebook posts related to the coronation ceremony of Sultan Ibrahim.

"We deeply respect the Malaysian Royal family and sincerely apologise over the incident and any distress caused to Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Johor Council and others impacted by this event," he said in a statement on Facebook, today.

Previously, several posts of 'RTM's condolence message content' in conjunction with Sultan Ibrahim's coronation ceremony circulated on Facebook.

RTM later clarified that it did not upload any official information in English as what circulated on Facebook.

The Malaysian Broadcasting Department Public Relations Division informed that what appeared on RTM's official Facebook site was an automatic translation by Facebook's system.

It said that RTM had lodged a police report and that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had contacted Meta regarding the erroneous translation by the Meta system.
