'Meta told to ensure smooth livestreams of Palestine solidarity rally'

KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has reminded Facebook parent company Meta to ensure livestreams of tomorrow's Palestine solidarity rally are not interrupted.

He said Meta was informed about the event and asked to ensure that livestreams of the rally were smooth.

"We have contacted Meta and emphasised the need for their support in ensuring that the live broadcasts of this significant event can proceed without any disruptions," he said at a press conference here.

Last year, TikTok users complained to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission that the platform was taking down or restricting their content and livestreams on Palestine, including those related to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's speech at the Malaysia Stands with Palestine Rally on Oct 24.

Fahmi said the rally tomorrow at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil was expected to draw 10,000 to 20,000 people.

"Meta has assured us that for heads of state, government leaders, ministers and officials, special considerations are given when discussing issues related to Palestine.

"This assurance was provided verbally by a high-ranking Meta official.

"We expect them to walk the talk by ensuring that the live broadcasts, not just the one on the prime minister's Facebook page, but also the ones by media partners, remain uninterrupted throughout the event," he said.

He said Meta representatives would meet government officials on Monday to explain the recent removal of Anwar's social media posts.

A detailed statement would be issued after the meeting, he said.

The rally aims to demonstrate Malaysia's and the people's support for the Palestinian cause. It will begin at 6.30pm tomorrow.
