Police warn "Kedah Bebas Judi" protesters to follow assembly laws

ALOR STAR: Participants of the upcoming "Kedah Bebas Judi" peaceful assembly, organised by the Islamic group Gabungan Gerak Rakyat Hidupkan Amar Makruf (Geraham), have been advised by police to adhere to regulations.

The assembly, supported by around 100 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the local community advocating for a ban on licensed gaming outlets in Kedah, is scheduled for Friday after prayers.

Kota Setar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Siti Nor Salawati Saad said the organisers must notify the police in advance as required under Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

This notification process includes submitting the form outlined in Schedule Four of Section 10, which also requires the consent of the property owner and occupants at the assembly location, and adhering to all specified guidelines and conditions.

Salawati said the prohibited areas for assemblies, as outlined in Schedule One of Section 3 of the Peaceful Assembly Act, includes places of worship, public transportation hubs, hospitals, and schools.

"The police urge organisers to follow all guidelines under this act so that the assembly can be facilitated in accordance with the law," she said.

"This is to ensure public order and safety are maintained without any unwanted incidents."

Salawati warned that the police would take action against any individuals or organisers who did not comply with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, and that strict measures will be enforced against those who provoke disturbances to public order.
