GEORGE TOWN: An early morning water overflow on Level 27 of Komtar caused most of the lifts to go out of operation.
Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng said that work to address the issue was underway and that some of the lifts were back in operation.
"We received reports on the matter early this morning and are taking the necessary actions to address it.
"For now, some of the affected lifts are back in operation," he told the New Straits Times when contacted.
The incident has since gone viral, with social media postings showing workers and guards sweeping away the water.
There was also a large crowd gathering on the ground floor.
Komtar houses the administrative offices of the state government and the Chief Minister of Penang.
It is understood that a technical fault with the fire pump tank resulted in the overflow of water.
The lifts servicing the mid and low zones were affected.
