Dengue death toll rising in Kedah

SUNGAI PETANI: Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor today expressed concern about the rising number of dengue fever cases in the state.

Sanusi said that residents should not take this matter lightly as dengue cases had resulted in eight deaths statewide this year, six of which occurred in Kuala Muda district.

"In 2022, Kedah had 1,461 cases with two deaths. In 2023, the number of cases rose to 5,207 with nine deaths.

"As of July 20, 2024, there have been 3,337 cases compared to 3,249 cases during the same period in 2023, an increase of 88 cases.

"This year, there have been eight deaths due to dengue fever, compared to seven deaths during the same period last year," he said after attending the Gotong Royong Perdana programme at Taman Ria here today.

Sanusi said everyone must cooperate in maintaining a clean environment.

"Maintaining cleanliness is very important, regardless of religion, race, or background.

"This is because a lack of cleanliness affects others in terms of health, and more, especially if it poses a danger that could lead to death.

"Another important aspect of our lives is fostering the gotong-royong culture. This spirit must exist in every neighborhood. If we look back at our society in the past, especially in villages, the gotong-royong culture was very strong."

Commenting on the declining water levels in three dams in the state, Sanusi said the government would conduct cloud seeding on July 29, 30, and 31 in Sungai Muda.

"InshaAllah, the effort will be successful, rain will fall, and dam levels will rise, stabilising the river water levels," he said.
