PENAMPANG: A large and economically strong community will have a greater influence, said Sabah Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.
He said when ethnic groups come together in a large community, their voices would be effectively heard, and their opportunities would increase.
"We have fallen behind and lost much (due to our lack of unity), but when we achieve economic strength, it can translate into the strength of a particular community," he said during the opening of the Momogun Grand Convention at the Penampang Cultural Centre.
Masidi said the convention saw 64 out of 96 ethnic-based associations express their desire to be referred to as "Momogun."
The Karanaan assemblyman added that he hoped the event would clarify and resolve the consensus on terms used to refer to the indigenous groups in Sabah.
"But at the same time, I encourage open-mindedness and continued discussion with those who object to the term 'Momogun'.
"I believe those who disagree have their reasons and may offer better suggestions. You need to articulate your concerns clearly."
Masidi added that the convention was not only about deciding on terminology but also to reflect the leaders' commitment to addressing societal requests.
Regardless of the outcome, he said, it should be based on the principle of "agree to disagree," and the final terminology should aim to unite the people.
Also present were Momogun National Congress President Tan Sri Wences Angang and Honorary Advisor Tan Sri Bernard Giluk Dompok.
