PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Shamsul Anuar Nasarah is leading the Malaysian delegation to Doha, Qatar, to attend the burial ceremony of assassinated Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh today.
In a statement, Wisma Putra said Shamsul Anuar is accompanied by Datuk Seri Dr. Mujahid Yusof and officials from the ministry.
"The Deputy Home Minister and the Malaysian delegation will attend the special jenazah prayers at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque in Doha after the Friday prayers.
"The body of Almarhum Ismail Haniyeh will be laid to rest at the Founder Imam cemetery in Lusail," the statement said.
The statement added that Malaysia stands in solidarity with the family members, leadership and people of Palestine.
"The insufferable grief, unequivocal suffering and untold sacrifice of Palestinians are the epitome of the life of the martyred Ismail Haniyeh who had given his family, his life and his soul to the struggle for freedom, peace and justice towards realising a sovereign, independent Palestinian state," the statement said.
Haniyeh was assassinated in Teheran after he attended a swearing-in ceremony for the Iranian president.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry on July 31 confirmed Haniyeh's death. Its spokesman Nasser Kananis, in a statement, said an investigation into the details of this incident by the relevant institutions is underway.
The news of Haniyeh's assassination shocked the Malaysian Cabinet, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said in a telephone conversation with Hamas official Dr Basem Naim.
"The entire cabinet members were shocked. This madness of the Israeli Zionist regime, going after people in their bedrooms and torturing people and thinking that they can end this war and aggression in this manner."
