PM joins funeral prayers for Haniyeh

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim joined more than 2,000 people for absentee funeral prayers for assassinated Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh at Masjid Negara here today.

The prime minister arrived at the mosque about 12.50pm, where he was welcomed by the congregation before attending Friday prayers.

Present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

The funeral prayers were led by Masjid Negara chief imam Ehsan Mohd Hosni, who also delivered the Friday sermon.

The prayers were held following the death of Ismail, who was killed at his home in Teheran, Iran, the previous day.

This week's Friday sermon was titled "Struggle for the Beloved Homeland" to mark Warriors Day.

Earlier, Anwar visited the Lucky Garden Hawker Centre in Bangsar for lunch.

Wearing a mint green Baju Melayu, he arrived about 12.30pm and was warmly greeted by stall operators and lunchtime patrons.
