Aviation sector decarbonisation roadmap rollout next month, says Loke

PUTRAJAYA: The soon-to-be-launched National Decarbonisation Roadmap for Aviation will be the "guiding principle" for aviation industry players

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said this was in line with the country's goal to reduce carbon emissions.

He said the proposal had been approved by the cabinet and would be launched in September after inputs from the industry's stakeholders.

"We have presented our (proposal) paper to the cabinet and they have given the endorsement and approval for the blueprint to be published and implemented.

"It's a policy guideline for our aviation sector in terms of the way forward for decarbonisation and it will involve both the airlines, airport operators and also our adoption of sustainable aviation fuel," Loke said at a press conference after officiating the ministry's Independence Month launching ceremony.

He added that all the guidelines adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, including the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), would be included in the policy.

Loke said before the launching of the policy, all stakeholders involved would be invited to attend a meeting to present the finalised version of the roadmap.

The government had in June announced the decision to establish a National Decarbonisation Committee involving state governments and relevant stakeholders to ensure a balanced and orderly transition to low-carbon development.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the transition would be supported by new and more inclusive and comprehensive policies, taking into account the country's commitments under the Paris Agreement.
