KANGAR: The Customs Department has foiled an attempt to smuggle 116 kilogrammes of subsidised cooking oil to Cambodia after arresting two foreigners in Padang Besar last Wednesday.
Perlis Customs director Ismail Hashim said the 12.50pm arrest was made after the enforcement team flagged down a Thailand-registered Toyota Altis at the Padang Besar Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex.
During the arrest, the driver, a 52-year-old Thai national, was driving with a 56-year-old Cambodian woman.
"Upon inspecting the car, the team found 116 packets of subsidised cooking oil from various brands were hidden in a luggage and paint container.
"We believe the woman had obtained the subsidised cooking supply from grocery stores and hypermarkets in Perlis," he said in a press conference at his office today.
