PM reiterates Malaysia's commitment to facilitate Southern Thailand peace talks

PASIR MAS: Malaysia is committed to helping resolve negotiations for the Southern Thailand Peace Dialogue, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He, however, said all proposals from Malaysia to facilitate the negotiations would be handed over to Thailand.

Although Malaysia acts only as a mediator, Anwar said the country as well as Thailand nevertheless wants to see the peace dialogue process resolved

"The issue surrounding the peace negotiations in Southern Thailand is not a Malaysian issue but rather a domestic issue for Thailand.

"Good relations between Malaysia and Thailand have led them to seek cooperation from Malaysia.

"We have committed to providing whatever is necessary, whether in the economy, security, or other areas," Anwar told reporters after he and Thai counterpart Srettha Thavisin visited Sungai Golok, Thailand, and Rantau Panjang here today.

It was previously reported that former director-general of the National Security Council Datuk Mohd Rabin Basir has been appointed as the Malaysian Government Facilitator for the southern Thailand peace dialogue process effective July 1.

He replaces Gen (Rtd) Tan Sri Zulkifli Zainal Abidin whose tenure ended on June 30.
