Customs seize 7.1 tonnes of pig carcasses worth over RM100k in Tumpat

TUMPAT: The Customs Department seized 7.1 tonnes of pig carcasses worth more than RM100,000, found in a lorry container at Chabang Empat here early Wednesday.

A man in his 40s, the driver of the lorry, was also arrested to facilitate the investigation.

Kelantan Customs Director Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long said the case came to light when the department's marine enforcement team spotted and began trailing the vehicle from Pengkalan Kubor at 1.30am.

"Our team intercepted the lorry container at Chabang Empat, leading to the discovery of 7.1 tonnes of pig carcasses, believed to have been imported from Thailand.

"The estimated value of the goods is RM106,500, with an additional RM42,600 in taxes," he said in a statement today.

Wan Jamal added that the pig carcasses were smuggled through an illegal port in Pengkalan Kubor and were believed to be intended for the Klang Valley market.

He also noted that investigations are ongoing to determine if the arrested driver is the actual owner of the seized items.
