Assistant engineer killed in MV Supply Amara explosion laid to rest

BAGAN SERAI: The body of Muhamad Firdaus Abdull Fatah, who was killed in an explosion onboard a supply vessel in the waters off Samalaju, Sarawak, was laid to rest early today.  

Earlier, Muhamad Firdaus's body arrived at Matang Jelutong Mosque for funeral prayers at 4.04am before being laid to rest at the Parit Jay Muslims Cemetery here at 7.25am.

His brother, Muhamad Amirul Syafiq, 28, said his 36-year-old brother, the sixth of nine siblings, had been working in Sarawak since 2011.  

He said that the last time his brother returned home was during Hari Raya Aidilfitri in May this year.  

"He was a good person, and before boarding the ship, he would inform our family and ask us to forgive any food and drink he had consumed (halalkan makan dan minum)."

"Before the incident occurred, he was expected to return home in another week, and we did not anticipate this would happen," he said when met at the cemetery.  

Meanwhile, his mother, Rokiah Hassan, 70, could not speak to the media but accepted the loss of her child.  

On Saturday, two ship workers were killed and another seriously injured in an explosion onboard a supply vessel in the waters off Samalaju on Friday night.  

Bintulu police chief Superintendent Nixon Joshua Ali stated that the deceased were believed to be a 25-year-old sailor from Sibu, Sarawak, and a 36-year-old assistant engineer from Perak.  

He added that another victim, a 22-year-old local man from Sabah, reportedly sustained serious injuries to his face and hands.  

At the time of the incident, there were 16 crew members onboard the vessel named MV Supply Amara.
